Abstract
In Spain, compulsory education ends at 16 years old. At this age of 16 you can leavethe education system voluntarily and also work. The early school leaving rates reach 19.0% inSpain (10.7% in the European Union, 28 countries) in 2016; improving a lot compared to the year2010 (28.2% in Spain and 13.9% in the European Union) and 2005 (31.0% in Spain and 15.7%in the European Union). What explains this high rate of early school leaving? What do youngpeople do and think about their education and access to the labor market? An analysis of the dataof the study of the Youth Institute of 2016 (www.injuve.es) will allow us to delve and answer thesequestions.
