Abstract

Wood and charcoal are a biological and cultural heritage that can be analyzed in archaeological and ethnographic contexts. Charcoal analysis, by sampling charcoal and by its botanical identification, provides information on the ongoing interaction of human groups with vegetation. We present in this paper an ethnographic study conducted in 2012 in Ghuala (Algeria), through the analysis of wood fuel used in a traditional bread oven for family use, in order to shed more light on the debate around fuel management in past human societies.
