Abstract

Nowadays it is impossible to imagine a world without brands. Brands have evolved over the last decades, but it is possible to find a continuity between what they were, what they are and what they will be. The aim of this article is to identify, define and illustrate nine major ideas that have influenced the design of brands. Some of these are directly situated in the early to mid-twentieth century; others were conceived in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
