Résumé

This doctoral thesis is intended as a monographic study on the casual and formal dances practiced in the Arab and Islamic world during the classical period (7th - 15th centuries), based on the textual analysis of a selection of classical Arabic sources, as well as the iconographic study of selected private collections and museums. It approaches the subject in its different aspects and from a variety of perspectives, since so far the research carried out in this discipline and in this geographical and temporal framework has been limited to specific and partial issues. The thesis offers a review of the sources and studies that have dealt with the subject in question, taking as a starting point its most significant aspects, such as terminology, the relationship of casual and formal dance with religion, its origin and expansion, its conception as an art, styles, representative figures (including the most relevant qualities, clothing and accessories and instruments), spaces and environments. In addition, this study seeks to analyze the image projected by this discipline on literature and art through iconographic representation. A glossary of terminology and an iconographic catalogue are also provided.
