Abstract

This essay aims at expanding on the genesis of Orientalism as a religious construction, and whose practice has been exercised through philology. To that end, I have tailored the following approach as a chronological journey that starts in the Roman Empire, and culminates in the colonial episode. I initially draw a thin line on the crystallization of monotheistic religions as a resulting perversion of the term “religio,” to later add a discussion of the Bible as the first piece of Oriental material. I conclude by inspecting some of the contributions made by Orientalists, and their centripetal repercussion into the theological paradigm.
