Abstract

The Recommendation of the Council of Europe 2008 on the use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the promotion of plurilingualism acknowledges language education as an essential part of the right to education and recommends that governments of member states adapt their language education policies to the rapid changes taking place in modern societies. The updated CEFR Companion volume(2021) promotes a plurilingual and pluricultural education that stresses the ability to integrate, and put into practice, the knowledge and experience a person has in more than one lan-guage and culture to communicate with others successfully. “Pequeños visitantes” is the name given to an educational initiative at the University of La Laguna that seeks to provide trainee Preschool teachers with real experiences in teaching English as a foreign language to groups of preschool children who visit the institution yearly. Through storytelling activities in the foreign language, trainees try to encourage the plurilingual and pluricultural education promoted by the Council of Europe at early ages. Reports from this didactic experience show that stories and storytelling are suitable resources to encourage an early approach to foreign languages and their cultures.
