José Manuel Viera González holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism by the University of La Laguna, where he was awarded the Bachelor’s Degree Extraordinary Award and the Best Bachelor’s Degree Thesis in Tourism. He also has a Master's Degree in Tourism Management and Planning by the University of La Laguna, with recognition of the Master's Degree Extraordinary Award. José Manuel is currently working as a pre-doctoral researcher in the Department of Applied Economics and Quantitative Methods at the University of La Laguna. He is a beneficiary of a grant from the Government of the Canary Islands for the predoctoral recruitment of research staff within an official doctoral programme in the Canary Islands for 2024, with research and teaching duties. His doctoral thesis focuses on measuring tourism sustainability at the scale of local tourism destinations (micro-destinations) and is supervised by Dr. Raúl Hernández Martín, within the framework of the Interuniversity PhD Program in Tourism at the University of La Laguna. His early academic work has focused on measuring seasonality, concentration, and distribution of tourism at the local level. José Manuel's research career includes experience as a research technician and researcher at the Canary Islands Tourism Observatory of the International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Additionally, he is a member of the research network of the CajaCanarias-Ashotel Tourism Chair at the University of La Laguna since May 2022. Finally, he collaborates on the 'UrbanTUR 2030' project, which focuses on the sustainability of urban regeneration in mature tourist areas, specifically in the economic tourism indicators section.
