Doctor by the Universidad de La Laguna with the thesis Sintesis asimetrica de tetrahidropiranos 2,3,5,6-tetrasustituidos y alfa-aminoacidos lipidicos. Primera sintesis del acido alfa-amino-araquidonico 1996. Supervised by Dr. Víctor Sotero Martín García.
José M. Padrón, a native of Puerto de la Cruz, is a distinguished scientist and Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Universidad de La Laguna (ULL). He graduated with honors in Pharmacy from ULL in 1991, beginning his research career with a PhD thesis on the asymmetric synthesis of biologically active molecules under the supervision of Prof. Víctor S. Martín at ULL's Instituto Universitario de Bio-Orgánica (IUBO), and obtaining his doctorate in 1996. Padrón subsequently pursued postdoctoral research at the Vrije Universiteit medisch centrum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, under the mentorship of Prof. G. J. Peters, gaining expertise in the biological evaluation of anticancer drugs. In 1998, he joined DSM Research in Geleen, where he collaborated on enantioselective membrane separation of carboxylic acids with Prof. J. G. de Vries. From 2001 to 2003, he worked at Deretil in Almería, Spain, focusing on the production of β-lactam antibiotics, a critical component in antimicrobial therapies. Returning to the Canary Islands in 2004, Padrón launched a screening program at the Research Unit of Hospital Universitario NS de Candelaria aimed at discovering new anticancer agents. In 2006, he rejoined IUBO as a Principal Investigator, founding BioLab, a research group specializing in molecular pharmacology studies. Since then, his career at ULL has progressed significantly; he was appointed as Tenured Full-Time Lecturer in 2011, promoted to Associate Professor in 2017, and achieved the position of Full Professor in 2020. Padrón coauthors over 200 scientific articles and has been principal investigator of a number of research projects. In recognition of his scientific impact, Padrón is among 31 researchers from ULL included in Stanford University's ranking of the world's top 2% most influential scientists. Additionally, he has held key roles within ULL, serving as Director of the Office of Technology Transfer (OTRI) from 2013 to 2015 and as Secretary of IUBO from 2019 to 2023. Padrón currently serves as Director of IUBO, where he continues to lead pioneering research in molecular pharmacology.
