Doctor by the Universidad de La Laguna with the thesis Factores genéticos de susceptibilidad y gravedad del asma estudio de genes candidatos y de la influencia del trasfondo genético poblacional 2012. Supervised by Dr. Carlos Alberto Flores Infante, Dr. Mariano Hernández Ferrer.

Maria Pino-Yanes has a degree in Biology since 2007 from University of La Laguna (ULL), with the recognition of Extraordinary Award. She performed her doctoral thesis in Life and Environmental Sciences (specialty Genetics) at Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria (HUNSC), which was defended in 2012 at ULL and was distinguished with the Extraordinary Thesis Award in the area of Health Sciences. During her undergraduate and predoctoral period, she obtained 4 different fellowships and a contract from Instituto de Salud Carlos III. From 2012-2014, she performed a postdoc of 28 months at the Department of Medicine at University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). From 2014 and 2016, she worked as a postdoc at the research unit at HUNSC. Since 2017, she received a Ramón y Cajal grant to start a research line at ULL. Throughout her career, she has co-authored a total of 79 articles in international peer-reviewed journals (61 in the first quartile), 12 of them as first or co-first or correspondence author, and 13 as senior corresponding author. In addition, 37 of her articles (47% of the total) are within the first decile of their area, including high-ranking journals in medical areas (PLoS Medicine, J Allergy Clin Immunol, Allergy, and Am J Respir Crit Care Med), Genetics (Nat Genet, Mol Biol Evol, and Hum Mol Genet), as well as multidisciplinary sciences (Nat Commun and Proc Natl Acad Sci USA). She has participated in 18 research projects (7 international, 7 national, and 4 regional), 3 as principal investigator (PI), and 2 contracts as PI. She has been reviewer for the State Research Agency and ERA-Net ERACoSysMed and for 18 international journals. She is affiliated to CIBERES and several international consortia. Maria Pino-Yanes has training in the fields of population genetics, genetic epidemiology, statistics, and bioinformatics applied to the study of respiratory diseases. Her research focuses on analyzing the genetic basis of asthma, studying the genetic factors involved in asthma exacerbations and treatment response, combining genome-wide association studies, admixture mapping, and targeted next-generation sequencing. She has led the pharmacogenomics analyses of the Pharmacogenomics in Childhood Asthma (PiCA) consortium, funded with a project as PI from Instituto de Salud Carlos III (AC150015) within the ERA-Net EraCoSysMed Horizon 2020. She has established a new cohort to also assess the role of the human genome variation and the microbiome in that phenotype funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (SAF2017-83417-R). In addition, she has recently expanded her research line to additional omic approaches (transcriptomics and epigenomics).
