Doctor by the Universidad de La Laguna with the thesis Las unidades silábicas en el reconocimiento visual de palabras procesos inhibitorios en el nivel léxico 1995. Supervised by Dr. Manuel de Vega Rodríguez.

Full Professor of Experimental Psychology, he completed his PhD under the supervision of Manuel de Vega and Fernando Cuetos, initiating his research in the field of Psycholinguistics. He has investigated the role of prelexical units in visual word recognition, the generation of new word representations in memory, the effects of accommodation in second language learning, and the effects of brain stimulation on speech recovery in aphasic patients. He employs methodologies ranging from reaction times and electroencephalographic (EEG) measures to the study of aphasic patients. He has served as Principal Investigator on five projects obtained through competitive calls and has supervised seven doctoral theses. He has been a member of the evaluation panel for the National Commission of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. He has served as secretary of the Spanish Society of Experimental Psychology and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Psychology at ULL. He is a co-editor of the "Revista de Logopedia, Foniatría y audiología" and member of the Editorial Board of "Psicológica," "Psicothema" (until 2023), and the "Revista electrónica de metodología aplicada" Currently, he is the director of IUNE - University Institute of Neuroscience at the University of La Laguna.
