Abstract

After considering the evolution of inequality of educational opportunity by social class in recent decades, this study raises an exploratory investigation using various sources of data on the possible explanations of this inequality. With data on reading in achievement tests for diagnosis  of the Canary Islands, PISA and PIRLS explores if or Bourdieu or Boudon explanations are more consistent with the data. Topics discussed include: intelligence, expectations for future academic of the children and teaching methods. The advantage of Boudon against Bourdieu is that Boudon allows more parsimoniously explain some social processes, such as different expectations for social class or the variability of educational outcomes within the same social class, as in intelligence.
