Sergio J. Álvarez-Méndez was born in 1987 in La Palma (Canary Islands). He received his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry in 2010 at the Universidad de La Laguna (ULL), with honours “Extraordinary Award to the Best Student’s Academic Record”. At the same university, he obtained his M.Sc. in Research in Organic Chemistry (2011) and his Ph.D. in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (2016), under the supervision of Prof. Víctor S. Martín and Dra. Celina García. Subsequently, he completed a Master's degree in Plant Health at the Universitat Politècnica de València (2018) and, for four academic years, served as an interim lecturer in the Department of Organic Chemistry at the ULL. Since 2025, he has held a position as an instrumental technician at the ULL Microscopy Service, combining his research work in the fields of Agricultural Engineering, Soil Science, Analytical Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. His research interests encompass the application of organic chemistry and microscopy to plant physiology, anaerobic digestion, and plastic pollution.
